“There’s That Save Liverpool FC Banner” – an interview with our very own Alan Cooper

Alan Cooper took it upon himself to organise a banner campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. All very straightforward, you might think – until you realise it started with two weeks to go before the finals, and without any money or contacts in place to make it happen.

Alan and the other guys involved managed to get nationwide coverage and more for the SaveLFC campaign. Firstly, a FIFA official decided to destroy one of the banners with a stanley knife – a story that got prominent coverage from the BBC, as well as other outlets: Fury at Liverpool FC Flag attack.

Then, later in the tournament, Jonathan Pearce announced live on BBC1 during the Portugal v Spain game: “There’s that Save Liverpool FC banner we’ve seen a few times at the tournament”. The goal of raising awareness accomplished, we interviewed Alan to get an insight into how he made this happen.

World Cup - Save LFC Banners

This summer Liverpool fans took their Save Liverpool campaign to the World Cup in South Africa – in the form of 4 banners (The Spirit of Shankly supporters union also had a similar banner there with their ‘Tom & George – not welcome anywhere’ message on it).

The banners were designed to raise awareness on the World stage about what is going on at the club and the need to get Tom Hicks and George Gillett out of the club.

The banners certainly caught people’s attention in South Africa and they were picked up on by the media as well:

Interview with Garreth Cummins of the Football Supporters Federation

Clearly we’re not the first Liverpool fans to get to work in this area – we’re a pretty active bunch when we see something we think needs to be put right, and that’s part and parcel of what makes the club great. One such example is Garreth Cummins of the Football Supporters Federation. Garreth . . . → Read More: Interview with Garreth Cummins of the Football Supporters Federation

Thanks to Roy Hodgson for helping the cause

Roy Hodgson today underlined the need for change behind the scenes at Liverpool FC. We won’t get too caught up in the forensic analysis of each sentence – it’s enough to note the general point Roy makes.

“The owners are not popular with the fans; the fans want new owners, they want new investment. . . . → Read More: Thanks to Roy Hodgson for helping the cause

A good day to bury bad news?

While most Liverpool fans eagerly pounced on what seems like the first Good News in a very long time with the signing of Joe Cole, the club had another news story on hand.

One it wasn’t so keen to publicise. The ticket prices for the new season.

Ok, I started a new game as the last one didn’t go too well, lol.

Settings: Manager (international footballer experience, which I could have been actually, but I always wanted to be a merchant banker), Liverpool, Roy Hodgson appointed as Assistant Manager in the editor.

My mate Dave is a footy writer and told me to sell some of the crap to raise funds, as I don’t have any transfer kitty. Surprised that Chelsea wanted Benyoon, but £5m! Cool. Lucas, Insua, Kiriakos, Aqualani and a few other flops on the transfer list. Made an offer to Joe Cole, great player, Dave said. Should of played at the world cup instead of that donkey Heskey!

Transfer Watch 2010

Tom Hicks, May 2010:

“We have no intention of selling any of our top players and we have a substantial transfer budget in place”.

“There’s so much misinformation about transfer spending. It’s more than doubled under the ownership of George and myself from the previous three years and we will make a significant investment this summer. It’s really about getting the right players.”

Really, Tom? Let’s see.

Christian Purslow gives the new manager his 'full back'-ing

Well well well. What an illuminating day it’s been eh? Emiliano Insua is offski to Florence and it seems we’re gonna be left with Zebedee or Ermintrude at left back if we’re not careful.

But never fear, Christian Purslow is here, and his heady stand is on the tiller in the pursuit of a truly competitive squad for the coming season – one that truly builds for our future. Our Chief Exe… Managing Direc… ehm, whatever his role is supposed to be is certainly no slouch when it comes to a game of Football Manager. He’s found a bug in the game whereby if you sell or release all your left backs, you’re automatically catapulted to the Champions League places. Fantastic work.
